Type 1 diabetes mellitus (type 1 DM) is characterised by the presence of several distinct circulating autoantibodies including autoantibodies to insulin, autoantibodies to glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) and autoantibodies to a protein tyrosine phosphatase, usually referred to as IA-2 or ICA-512. ASSAY PRINCIPLE In insulin antibody (IAb) assay test serum samples are incubated first with 125I-(A14)-monoiodinated insulin. This is followed by addition of anti-human IgG to precipitate any labelled insulin-anti insulin complexes which have formed.
