Anti-IgA (alpha), D (delta), G (gamma) and M (mu) do not cross-react with each other, heavy chains, T cell, monocytes, granulocytes, or erythrocytes. Anti-IgA, D, G and M are useful in the identification of leukemias, plasmacytomas, and certain non-Hodgkins lymphomas. The most common feature of these malignancies is the restricted expression of a single heavy chain class. Demonstration of clonality in lymphoid infiltrates indicates that the infiltrate is clonal and therefore malignant. Human surface membrane bound IgM complexes with a hetrodimer of transmembrane proteins of Ig alpha and Ig beta to form the B cell antigen receptor (BCR). The BCR complex plays an important role in B cell development and activation [1].
