PARP is a 116 kDa nuclear chromatin-associated enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of ADP-ribose units from NAD+ to nuclear proteins such as topoisomerases, histones, and PARP. Following DNA damage, catalytic activity of PARP is increased in nonapoptotic cells. It has been suggested that PARP plays an important role in mediating normal cellular response to DNA damage.
